ADEQUATE
Some writers fail to make paragraphs
complete by providing enough evidance the topic sentence. While a short
emphatic paragraph is sometimes desirable, the brief, under-developed paragraph
of 2, 3, or 4 sentences too often is a sign of an inexperienced writer. A
paragraph is adequately developed when it describes, explains and supports the
topic sentence. Generally speaking, a paragraph which consist of only two or
three sentences is under-developed. A good rule of thumb to follow is to make
sure that a paragraph contains at least four sentences which explain and
elaborated on the topic sentence.
Strategies for adequate development
:
1. Elaborate;
Spell out the details by defining,
or by clarifying and adding relevant, pertinent information.
2. Illustrate
Paint verbal picture that helps make
or clarify your point. Well illustrated pieces are esier to read
and follow
than those on a high level of abstraction.
3. Argue;
Give the reasons, justifications,
and rationales for the position or view you have taken in the topic
sentence.
Draw inference for the reader and explain the significance or assertions or
claims being
made.
4. Process;
Describe the historical development
of phenomenon at issue
5. Describe;
Observe without precoceived works.
6. Classify;
Organize phenomenon or ideas into
large categories that share common characteristics
7. Analyze;
Divide phenomena or ideas into
elements
8. Compare
and contrast;
Show similarities and differences
between two or more phenomena or ideas.
9. Relate;
Show correlation and causes.
